Title: Kinetic theory and collisionless plasma

Abstract: The talk will begin with a brief overview of kinetic theory and then focus on models of collisionless plasma. In particular the Vlasov-Poisson system will be considered. Global existence of smooth solutions in three space dimensions was established by Pfaffelmoser and shortly after by Lions and Perthame in 1992. We will attempt to give insight into a proof of this result. The relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system will also be stated and discussed briefly. Global existence of smooth solutions in three space dimensions for this system is an open question.
