Abstract: The variational formulation of problems issuing from imaging, micromagnetics, membrane theories, foams, quantum dots and other physical applications often involve energies of different dimensionality, from bulk to interfacial terms, multiple scale, higher order derivatives, and discontinuous underlying fields. These present new challenges for the Calculus of Variations as existing theories usually do not apply.
