  • Course and Syllabus Design
    Monday, April 2, 4:30-5:30, Wean Hall 7218

Many of the decisions affecting the success of a course take place well before the first day of class. In this interactive seminar, we will analyze several effective math syllabi to examine the planning and organization that went into the course design. We will abstract a simple model for designing effective courses and discuss ways to communicate the course structure to students in ways that enhance curiosity and motivation.

  • Teaching Problem Solving
    Monday, April 9, 4:30-5:30, Wean Hall 7218

How can you teach problem solving in ways that emphasize mathematical reasoning rather than plug-and-chug calculations? In this interactive seminar, we will watch and discuss a short video, using it to highlight some common pitfalls of math instruction as well as effective strategies for teaching problem solving. We will also discuss ways to adapt these methods to your current or future teaching context.
