• Textbook: APOSTOL, Calculus, Vol. 1, Second Edition, Wiley Publ., 1967
• Description of the Course : This course covers the basic contents of differential and integral calculus of functions of one variable, while attempting to strike a more even balance between algorithmic and conceptual components than is achieved in the course Calculus 1 (21-121). Thus, our goal is not only to achieve a fluency in algorithmic aspects of calculus, i.e., manipulative skills, calculation and application of derivatives and integrals, but also to understand precise statements and proofs of the properties of derivatives and integrals that support the calculations and applications.
• Prerequisites: It is highly recommended that students have taken a prior calculus course covering basic manipulation, calculation and applications of derivatives and integrals.
• Course Contents :

Brief overview of background material in the Introduction (Parts 3 and 4), and Chapters 1 through 6, Section 21.
• Homework:

Homework exercises will be assigned every Monday during lecture, and will be due in recitation on Tuesday of the following week. Homework is an essential component of the learning process. Working the exercises will force you to learn the work, and your graded homework will give some feedback on your progress. You are strongly advised to attempt all of the homework problems as well as some additional problems of your own choice.
• Grading Policy:

60%- average of 4 hour-tests in lecture

20%- final exam

20% - homework

You will receive a letter grade at midsemester, based on the first two hour-tests and homework, and a letter grade at the end of the course, but individual hour-tests are not assigned letter grades. The tests will be closed book and notes without calculators. The letter grades are computed as follows, A: 90 - 100 B: 80 - 90 C: 65 - 80 D: 55 - 65.

Make-up tests will be given only in the case of a documented medical excuse, a university-sanctioned absence (e.g., participation in a varsity sporting event), or a family emergency. Please see me at the earliest time possible to schedule a make-up. Make-up exams may be oral.
No collaboration is permitted on the tests.
On homework, collaboration is permitted subject to the following:
a) you may discuss homework problems with fellow students and with instructors in order to get help on various parts of a problem, but you may not simply copy someone else's solution;
b) when you do use someone else's ideas, cite the source(s) clearly on your written solution and indicate at which step(s) of your solution you have used that source. In summary, for the homework, copying the work of others is not allowed, but using the ideas of others, with proper citation, is permitted.
