"Stability Properties for a Phase Field System with Memory"

Abstract

We focus in this lecture on a phase field model with memory designed to describe phase transitions which occur in the presence of slowly relaxing internal modes. A comparison is made between this model and the classical phase field model in terms of steady states and their stability. In particular, linear as well as nonlinear stability is discussed and the implications of Liapunov functionals and a variation of parameters formula are outlined under a variety of assumptions on the memory kernels.
