Abstract

A column of heavy fluid over a light fluid in a porous > medium is unstable. Linear growth of the instability is followed by a > fully nonlinear regime, where one observes a mixing layer composed of > an intricate network of `fingers'. We prove bounds that quantify this > mixing. A mathematical feature of interest is a scalar conservation > law where the usual entropy solution is not selected.
