"Structured Deformations in Plasticity"

Abstract

After a short account of the theory of structured deformations, some applications to plasticity will be briefly reviewed. The first of them is an energetic interpretation of the work-hardening of single crystals, based on the experiments of G. I. Taylor. The equilibrium problem for a body undergoing structured deformations will then be treated via energy minimization, obtaining the same equations as those governing the equilibrium of an elastic-perfectly plastic body. Finally, for a beam with a strain-softening moment-curvature diagram it will be shown that the softening branch is not accessible via stable equilibrium configurations.
