"Phase-field modeling of binary alloy solidification"

Abstract

Phase-field models for two-dimensional simulations of binary alloy solidification are studied. The derived phase-field equations involve both temperature and solute redistribution. Crystallization of a single and multiple dendrites with different orientations is simulated. The equations are solved using the Finite Element method with triangular elements on unstructured meshes, which are adapted to the solution. This numerical scheme was compared to the Finite Difference discretization on uniform grids in terms of accuracy and performance. Conditions for the most efficient application for each of the numerical approaches are found.
