Title: An Optimiality Condition: Introduction to the Euler-Lagrange equation.

Abstract: This talk is an introduction to the Euler-Lagrange equation, which is a tool used in many optimization problems. The goal is to go from one "state" to another in an "optimal way", such as fi nding the path with the smallest length between two points. Starting from basic calculus we will develop some surprisingly powerful tools to optimize costs such as distances, internal energy, and bounding areas.
