It could have been done prior to Alex's first comment, or it could
have been done in cooperation with Alex, or it could have been done
after Mike's response, or it could have been instructing Mike to
apologize and back off rather than shut down all contact. There were a
variety of ways to reasonably extract Mike from the situation without
a problem.
