So, it's about time for the freshmen to arrive at local schools, and we're
hoping lots of them will want to play V:tR with us. The thing is, as you
all no doubt recall, it's really hard to make a character, especially if
you're new to LARP, in a new place. And to try to make that character
without knowing much about the venue, then play it in a void, with no
pre-existing IC allies or enemies, is even harder. We won't keep many new
players that way, and that will hurt our story.
So the Pittsburgh Requiem ST staff has a request of you, the players.
Please, please, PLEASE come to next game with some ideas for "character
hooks" that a new player could use to tie his or her character to yours.
Give us useful things from your character's background--things that would
help in building a new character and tying it into our city's story. It
doesn't have to be something the STs already know about, either. Feel
free to be creative; make the city's history up! (Because it will be a=20
concern for some of you: Yes, you can e-mail your hooks to the ST list=20
instead of telling us at the game. Also, because some of these will=20
probably be your character's secrets, you should know that we won't=20
share these things with the other PCs, and we'll keep the newbies from=20
knowing who goes with which item, unless they decide to use an item as=20
a tie-in.)
Some examples of what might be "good character hooks":
- "I spent a lot of time in ____ in the 80s. I was hanging out with [this
group of people], [for this reason]. I am/am not all right with having=20
Embraced someone during that time period."
- "My mortal sister is still alive, and I think she's looking for me."
- "My [LOCAL] childe/sire is missing and presumed dead. I'm a little
nervous about his potentially returning..."
Some examples of what might not be so useful, for this specific purpose:
- "My entire family is dead."
- "I hung out with [an existing PC] in [a distant VSS] for a long
time. We did ...."
- "I killed my sire. I feel bad about it."
We'll give out XP for these hooks, too! ::insert::One per hook, in lieu of
XP for downtown reports (max 3 XP).::/insert::
Also, we're planning to have a character creation session for the new playe=
rs on
Friday, September 2. If you'd like to come help people make characters,
or if you'd like to help folks make tie-ins that way, please come then!
Thanks!
