ABSTRACT. We will discuss challenges in coarse graining of large interacting systems. An approach using combined analysis and numerical simulation will be presented. Both temporal and spatial coarse graining will be demonstrated where the limiting equations are in terms of distribution functions or macroscopic averages. Examples from fluid flow as well as grain growth will be given. New challenges and opportunities in biomedicine will be presented.
