Tests There will be three tests during the semester. Dates
will be given approximately two weeks in advance. There will be
no final exam.
You will receive a letter grade at midsemester, based on the first
two hour-tests and homework, and a letter grade at the end of the course,
but individual hour-tests are not assigned letter grades. The tests will
be closed book and notes without calculators. The letter grades are computed
as follows, A: 90 - 100 B: 80 - 90 C: 65 - 80 D: 55 - 65.
Make-up tests will be given only in the case of a documented
medical excuse, a university-sanctioned absence (e.g., participation in
a varsity sporting event), or a family emergency. Please see me at the
earliest time possible to schedule a make-up. Make-up exams may be oral.
No collaboration is permitted on the tests.
On homework, collaboration is permitted subject to the following:
a) you may discuss homework problems with fellow students and with
instructors in order to get help on various parts of a problem, but you
may not simply copy someone else's solution;
b) when you do use someone else's ideas, cite the source(s) clearly
on your written solution and indicate at which step(s) of your solution
you have used that source. In summary, for the homework, copying the work
of others is not allowed, but using the ideas of others, with proper citation,
is permitted.
