• Textbook:  Numerical Analysis,Third Edition , D. Kincaid and W. Cheney, Brooks/Cole .
• Description of the Course : We will cover the following sections, 1.3, 3.1-3.4, 4.4-4.7, Chapter 5-8 (most of it).  If time permits we may have some additional material depending on the class interests.
• Prerequisites: Calculus and Linear Algebra.
• Homework: Homework will be assigned weekly, and turned in at the beginning of Tuesday's class.  Normally, the homework will include material covered through Thursday's lecture.  While this set of problems will be collected and graded, it should be taken as a minimal selection.  You should test your knowledge by doing other problems in the appropriate section.

Homework will include theoretical problems as well as computer assignments. Due to the variety in the background of the students in this class
I will give as necessary a choice between theoretical and computer assignments.

Tests There will be three tests during the semester. Dates will be given approximately two weeks in advance.  There will be no final exam.
You will receive a letter grade at midsemester, based on the first two hour-tests and homework, and a letter grade at the end of the course, but individual hour-tests are not assigned letter grades. The tests will be closed book and notes without calculators. The letter grades are computed as follows, A: 90 - 100 B: 80 - 90 C: 65 - 80 D: 55 - 65.

Make-up tests will be given only in the case of a documented medical excuse, a university-sanctioned absence (e.g., participation in a varsity sporting event), or a family emergency. Please see me at the earliest time possible to schedule a make-up. Make-up exams may be oral.
No collaboration is permitted on the tests.
On homework, collaboration is permitted subject to the following:
a) you may discuss homework problems with fellow students and with instructors in order to get help on various parts of a problem, but you may not simply copy someone else's solution;
b) when you do use someone else's ideas, cite the source(s) clearly on your written solution and indicate at which step(s) of your solution you have used that source. In summary, for the homework, copying the work of others is not allowed, but using the ideas of others, with proper citation, is permitted.
