The subject in question has been traditionally called .Mixture Theory., a term which I consider misleading. There is a large literature on the subject, most of which is defective. However, the work of R. Sampaio, M.E.Gurtin, M.L.Oliver, and especially W.O.Williams in the years 1973-1978 is sound but still lacks a precise conceptual foundation. The purpose of this lecture is to provide such a foundation.
