21-123: Calculus of Approximation

This course concerns infinite sequences and series. These discrete objects could be used to approximate continuous objects such as functions and integrals that have been studied in 21-115, 21-116 and 21-117.

James Stewart, Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Fourth Edition

We'll cover sections 4.4, 4.9, 11.1-10, and 11.12.

Prerequisite knowledge

21-115 and 21-116 (or equivalents).

Grade

There will be weekly homework assignments, and two exams. Each exam will be given in class for 1 hour and 20 minutes. For the overall score, HW takes 20%, exam 1 takes 45% and exam 2 takes 35%. Exam 1 covers sections 4.4, 4.9, 11.1-11.7. Exam 2 covers 11.8, 11.9, 11.10, and 11.12. The final grade is determined according to the following scale:

The majority of exam problems will be similar to homework problems and examples given in the lectures. Exams are closed book. If your performance on the exams is very impressive, the percentage that your homework grades take may be lowered.

Homework assignments

Homework is usually due on Mondays in class. Late HW will not be accepted!
