(1) Introduction to von Neumann algebras (for set theorists)
(2) The connection between countable Borel equivalence relations and von
Neumann algebras through the so-called group-measure-space construction.
(3) The classification problem for von Neumann algebras (factors) and
Borel reducibility
(4) Popa's cocycle super-rigidity theorems which come out of (2) above,
and which have applications to countable Borel equivalence relations.
