Research
My work is concerned mostly with the conceptual foundations of some branches of pure mathematics and also of the mathematics that underlies some physical theories, in particular classical continuum mechanics and thermodynamics as well as special relativity.
I am best known as a co-author of The Non-Linear Field Theories of Mechanics [1]. It was first published in 1965 and has become the standard reference work in the field. It was reprinted in 1992, translated into Chinese in 2000, and again reprinted in 2004.
The Five Contributions to Natural Philosophy [2], published in 2004, provide a blueprint for updating The Non-Linear Field Theories of Mechanics and hence a guideline for future developments in the field.
Many of the papers I wrote until 1974 have been reprinted in [3]. My textbook [4] was originally published in 1987, but is now available on my website. I am still working on the second volume, but parts of it are posted on my website.
Since my retirement from teaching in 1993, I have been occupied with organizing and preparing for publication my large backlog of unpublished manuscripts and notes. Much of it has been posted on my website, for example the book [5] on special relativity and the book [6] on differentiable manifolds. More will be added as time goes by.
