Sam Cohn Carnegie Mellon University Title: The Pointwise Ergodic Theorem with some applications Abstract: Ergodic theory studies the behavior of dynamical systems that "mix nicely" in a measure theoretic sense. First I will talk about the concept of ergodicity, providing some historical background and examples of such systems. Then I will prove a version of the pointwise ergodic theorem and we will end with some neat applications to normal numbers and continued fractions.
