Title: Isometric Embeddings & Geometric Rigidity

Abstract: Why does a sheet of paper enjoy a certain floppiness, while a block of wood is decidedly un-floppy? Can science ever build a flat doughnut? Why does Madagascar seem so much smaller than Great Britain when it's really twice the size?

We'll take some basic tools from differential geometry and discuss all the interesting phenomena which occur when we try to deform materials without letting them stretch or skew.
