A domain decomposition using DG jumps and mortars for coupling a model of poroelasticity with elasticity.

Abstract: We couple a time-dependent poroelastic model in a region with an elastic model in an adjacent (usually much larger) region. We discretize each model independently with continuous finite elements on non-matching grids, and we realize a domain decomposition on the interface between the two regions by introducing DG jumps. Then we introduce mortars, representing the displacements, to decouple the computation in each region. The unknowns are condensed on the interface, so that at each time step, the computation in each subdomain can be performed in parallel. The combination of DG jumps and mortars eliminate automatically the rigid body-motions, so that each subdomain problem is uniquely solvable. We also propose an algorithm where the computation of the poroelastic pressure is time-lagged. We do an error analysis and we show that in each case, the matrix of the interface problem is positive definite.
