Abstract: We consider the Cauchy problem for the Vlasov-Maxwell system in a low dimensional setting. It is not known if solutions that start smooth remain smooth. To gain some insight into this question, the problem is solved with both a finite difference method and a particle method. An attempt is made to choose conditions which will result in a solution that is likely to blow up. However, when both methods are used, it is found that the spatial derivatives of the fields do not grow rapidly.
