About Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon

Pittsburgh

The Carnegie Mellon campus is located in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh, adjacent to major museums, a large city park, and many coffeehouses, bookstores, galleries and restaurants. Over the past several decades, Pittsburgh has transformed itself from a steel town to a city recognized for its high-tech industry and cultural centers. Downtown Pittsburgh, approximately 2 miles from campus, is home to several corporate headquarters and a variety of cultural institutions. Restaurants and shopping in Pittsburgh's many distinct neighborhoods are a short bus ride away. Less than an hour's drive can take you to nearby mountains and rivers where you can enjoy hiking, cycling, camping, skiing, and rafting.

Pittsburgh's central location makes travel between cities convenient. Most cities east of the Mississippi are less than a two-hour flight from Pittsburgh. The 28X bus destined for Pittsburgh International Airport leaves Carnegie Mellon's campus every twenty minutes. Greyhound and Amtrak operate travel routes between Pittsburgh and all regions of the U.S., and major interstate highways pass through the area.

Carnegie Mellon University and the Mellon College of Science

Founded in 1900 by the American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, Carnegie Mellon was originally named the Carnegie Technical Schools. Today, we are one of the nation's top-ranked centers of higher education, composed of seven colleges and numerous research institutes. We are a multi-disciplinary research institution of over 5000 undergraduates, 2500 graduate students, 1000 faculty, and over 3000 staff.

The Mellon College of Science, with departments of biological sciences, chemistry, mathematical sciences, and physics, is highly interdisciplinary. Many of the researchers are leaders in their fields. Several new programs, centers and laboratory renovations have taken place in the college through an aggressive pursuit of funding for key research projects.
