Title: Repulsive and Attractive Interactions in Nematic Liquid Crystals

Abstract: Both repulsive and attractive molecular interactions can give rise to orientational order in liquid crystals. We combine these two interactions in a unified density functional model, and study the high density limit. Here the system shows a unique feature: the orientational distribution function has compact support. As attractive interactions are turned on, the behavior changes, and at a critical interaction strength thermotropic behavior is attained. The dependence of phase coexistence on attractive interaction strength remains to be explored.
