"Elasticity with Disarrangements as a Continuum Field Theory"

I will describe recent joint work with Luca Deseri (University of Ferrara)whose aim is the broadening of the classical field equations of non-linear elasticity to include the effects of both smooth and non-smooth geometrical changes at submacroscopic length scales. This work entails retracing in the broader setting of structured motions the geometrical, kinematical, dynamical, and constitutive paths leading to the classical theory. The field equations will be presented, with some indication of how they are obtained, initial applications to elastic fluids will be discussed, and some attention will be paid to the understanding of how submacroscopic geometrical changes can contribute to internal dissipation.
