Variational problems motivated by soft elastomer actuators

A variety of soft elastomers and elastomeric composites are being developed and studied for possible application in actuators. The large deformation that these materials undergo, and the coupling between the electrical and mechanical fields give rise to interesting problems in the calculus of variations and homogenization.
