On Shocks in a Collisionless Plasma

Abstract: Motivated by the problem of shocks in collisionless plasma, we consider the steady Vlasov-Maxwell system in one space dimension. It is assumed that as x tends to negative infinity (upwind) the magnetic field approaches a nonzero constant and the particle density approaches a homogeneous state. Then under some assumptions (including that positive and negative ions have the same mass) it is shown that a steady solution must have the same behavior downwind as upwind, ruling out shock solutions.
